The family ties that define Jack Howell, a critical piece in CSU football’s hopeful turnaround Before he takes the field, Jack Howell always makes sure to check his phone.Inevitably, there will be a text from Dad — and a long one at that. The messages are expressions of love, with some football sprinkled in, and a reminder of the exceptional family name Howell’s trying to live up to.“I definitely take pride in my name, and that’s always something that’s defined my play,” Howell said. “… I look up to (my dad), I look up to my sister’s incredible work ethic and determination, and I admire the hours my younger brother is putting in, too, to become his own player.“All of that fuels me on Saturdays. That’s how I became the player that I am.”The player Howell has become is one of the best defensive backs in the Mountain West — and the latest in a line of Howells to live up to the standard set by the family patriarch.Jack’s dad, John, played at CSU and then six years in the NFL, winning Super Bowl XXXVII with the...

Broncos defense two-deep: Vance Joseph returns to lead unit that more than held its own in 2022 Back in Denver after spending the four years in Arizona, Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has intriguing pieces to work with in 2023. Cornerback Pat Surtain II and safety Justin Simmons are two of the best at their respective positions. Denver’s outside linebackers can be disruptive, but that will depend in large part on Randy Gregory staying healthy. The Broncos brought back inside linebacker Alex Singleton while drafting Drew Sanders, who turned heads during camp. If the Broncos can match last year’s performance, this could be a salty group. Here’s a look at the projected two-deep roster:Defensive endZach Allen | 996-4, 281, 25, 5th season, Boston CollegeAllen joined the Broncos to fill the void left behind by Dre’Mont Jones, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Allen played under Joseph for four years in Arizona, where he totaled 9 ½ sacks and 95 tackles over his last two seasons.Elijah Garcia | 956-5, 302, 25, 2nd Season, Rice Garcia played in the final tw...
