Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday paid tribute to three Ukrainian pilots killed in a mid-air collision, including one with the callsign “Juice” who gained prominence for giving anonymous media interviews during Russia’s war in the country.“Yesterday, a catastrophe in the sky over the Zhytomyr region killed three pilots, including Andriy Pilschikov, callsign ‘Juice,’” Zelenskyy wrote on X, the platform previously known as Twitter. “My heart goes out to the pilots’ friends and loved ones. The investigation is ongoing, and the truth will be revealed.”Pilschikov was killed during a combat mission when two L-39 planes collided, the Ukrainian Air Force said on X. He was not piloting the planes, but was there in an observing capacity, according to a U.S. official.Pilschikov was a high-profile proponent of increased American assistance to Ukraine to help modernize the country’s air forces, which he had depicted as a weakness against the Russians.“They have almost...

Jim Montgomery still bullish on the Bruins

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 07:35:07 GMT

The type of defeat the Bruins absorbed last spring is not the kind you just “get over.” You win a record 65 games and then get bounced in the first round of the playoffs, and it’s going to stick with you for a very long time. But life goes on, the page must be turned and those in charge must plan and strategize for the new season ahead. As summer winds down, coach Jim Montgomery was getting into that mode last week. He’s spending less time on the golf course, more time in his headquarters at Warrior Ice Arena trying to figure out a way to get his team back in playoff position so that his B’s can attempt a a do-over next April. That’s not a given. In his second year behind the B’s bench, the Jack Adams Award-winning Montgomery won’t have the likes of Patrice Bergeron and Nick Foligno to lean on to guide the dressing room. Also out the door were top-six talents David Krejci, Taylor Hall and Tyler Bertuzzi. While there is still talent here, this promise...

White shooter kills 3 Black people in Florida hate crime as Washington celebrates King’s dream

WASHINGTON (AP) — A masked white man carrying at least one weapon bearing a swastika fatally shot three Black people inside a Florida store Saturday in an attack with a clear motive of racial hatred, officials said. The shooting in a Dollar General store in a predominately African-American neighborhood left two men and one woman dead and was “racially motivated,” Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said.In addition to carrying a firearm with a painted symbol of the genocidal Nazi regime of Germany of the 1930s and 1940s, the shooter issued racist statements before the shooting. He killed himself at the scene. “He hated Black people,” the sheriff said. The shooting came on the same day thousands visited Washington, D.C., to attend the Rev. Al Sharpton’s 60th anniversary commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. Rudolph McKissick, a national board member of Sharpton’s N...

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian authorities have launched an investigation after a midair collision between two warplanes in the west of the country killed three pilots. Ukraine’s air force spokesman Yuri Ihnat told Ukrainian television on Sunday it wasn’t immediately clear how long the probe would take. According to the air force’s Telegram page, two L-39 training military aircraft collided on Friday during a combat mission over Ukraine’s western Zhytomyr region. Three pilots were killed, including Andriy Pilshchykov, a well-known pilot with the nickname “Juice” who was an outspoken advocate for Ukraine getting F-16 fighter jets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his nightly address on Saturday paid tribute to Pilshchykov, describing him as a “Ukrainian officer, one of those who helped our country a lot.” Ukraine’s Vasilkiv tactical aviation brigade on Sunday identified the other two pilots killed in the collision as Viacheslav Minka and Serhiy Prokazin....

Global inflation pressures could become harder to manage in coming years, research suggests

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 07:35:07 GMT

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (AP) — Rising trade barriers. Aging populations. A broad transition from carbon-spewing fossil fuels to renewable energy. The prevalence of such trends across the world could intensify global inflation pressures in the coming years and make it harder for the Federal Reserve and other central banks to meet their inflation targets. That concern was a theme sounded in several high-profile speeches and economic studies presented Friday and Saturday at the Fed’s annual conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. For decades, the global economy had been moving toward greater integration, with goods flowing more freely between the United States and its trading partners. Lower-wage production overseas allowed Americans to enjoy inexpensive goods and kept inflation low, though at the expense of many U.S. manufacturing jobs. Since the pandemic, though, that trend has shown signs of reversing. Multinational corporations have been shifting their supply chains away...

More than 600 firefighters backed by water-dropping aircraft struggle to control wildfires in Greece

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — More than 600 firefighters, including reinforcements from several European countries, backed by a fleet of water-dropping planes and helicopters were battling three persistent major wildfires in Greece Sunday, two of which have been raging for days.A massive blaze in the country’s northeastern regions of Evros and Alexandroupolis, believed to have caused the deaths of 20 people, was burning for a ninth day.The blaze, one of the largest single wildfires ever to have struck a European Union country, has decimated vast tracts of forest and burnt homes in the outlying areas of the city of Alexandroupolis. On Sunday, 295 firefighters, seven planes and five helicopters were tackling it, the fire department said. The wildfire has scorched 77,000 hectares (770 square kilometers) of land and had 120 active hotspots, the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service said Sunday. Arcangelo takes the Travers Stakes for trainer Jena Antonucci

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 07:35:07 GMT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Trainer Jena Antonucci heard all the skeptics of Arcangelo and how the two-and-half month layoff between starts would effect the 3-year-old thoroughbred in Saturday's 154th running of the Travers Stakes. She elected to tune them out, and let her horse do the talking. And Arcangelo delivered, backing up his win in the Belmont Stakes in June with a decisive victory in Saratoga Race Courses' mid-summer derby."Thanks to the naysayers for motivating me a little bit more; not that we need a little bit more motivation," said Antonucci. "But we will stay focused on what works for this horse."The $1.25 million, grade one race for three-year-olds offered a star-studded seven-horse field - perhaps the deepest pool of talent the race has seen in years. Arcangelo was one of three Triple Crown race winners in the lineup, including Kentucky Derby winner Mage, and Preakness victor National Treasure. But none of those three horses were favorited Saturday. The leader...

Ask Amy: I’m hurt by their response, but maybe it’s just a Gen Z thing?

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 07:35:07 GMT

Dear Amy: I married my husband two years ago. He has two children from a previous marriage, both in their mid-20s. I have a teen still at home.We have a really nice time with his children. We regularly talk/check in with them, and I believe we have a good relationship. However, recently my mother died, after a sudden and torturous battle with cancer. My stepchildren have not expressed their condolences in any way, and both skipped the funeral.I saw them two days later and they did not address it at all.My feelings are very hurt, but I’m not sure they should be.My mother used to say that young adulthood was her least favorite phase of life – people in their 20s are particularly self-involved. So this may just be the behavior of that age group.I haven’t shared my feelings with my husband because I don’t want him to feel bad.I suppose my real worry is that while we all get along, they do not want to be close.I do want to be close. I love them and want to nurture a rela...
