We’ve reached the last few days of the high school football season. It’ll be the 16th and final weekend, one more game for the fortunate few that will play for a state championship on Friday or Saturday in Southern California. With most of the teams in the Bay Area News Group’s coverage area done until 2024, only a couple of changes were made in this week’s rankings. The Top 5 remained status quo even though third-ranked Pittsburg lost on the road to Folsom on Saturday, its bid for a state championship and perfect season ending in a 28-25 defeat. The Pirates are still No. 3, followed by San Ramon Valley and Los Gatos, which lost to Pittsburg in September.SRV stayed at No. 4, given that its resume includes two close losses to De La Salle, one in overtime, and a 16-point section final loss to Pittsburg in a game that was much tighter than the final score.Acalanes was the big mover, pulling league rival Campolindo along for the ride.As the Dons have continued to win...String of vehicle break-ins reported in Campbell

The first NET rankings of the 2023-24 season were revealed Monday. While it’s probably too early for panic across the Pac-12 footprint, it’s a fine time for concern. For those unfamiliar, the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) is an important piece of the March Madness selection process. There’s no hard cutoff for making the at-large field, but teams in the top-40 are fairly safe. The situation will change significantly over the next three months as the NET acquires more results to compute and the rankings better reflect the sport’s true hierarchy. That change could be for the better, or the worse. The Pac-12 placed just three teams in the top-40: No. 3 Arizona, No. 28 Washington State and No. 39 Utah. How does that compare to peer conferences? Poorly.Top-40 teams by conference:Big 12: sevenSEC: sixBig Ten: fiveMountain West: fiveACC: fourBig East: fourPac-12: threeAgain, the NET is fluid — the initial rankings are a means of providing context.
