Corinth CSD goes from 'Tomahawks' to 'River Hawks'

CORINTH, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Another New York school district is moving away from a Native American mascot, after state mandate has districts reconsidering their identities. Corinth Central School District is donning a new icon, and taking to the skies. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! At a school board meeting last month, the district announced that it would be donning the name and mascot of the Corinth River Hawks for mascot and sports team purposes. The district previously went by the Corinth Tomahawks.Corinth CSD put out a survey in late January, asking students, residents and stakeholders for opinions on what kind of name would best represent the school district. The survey asked for applicants to suggest a new name to represent the district, and the final four choices were sent out across the student body. The Suncor Energy oil refinery in Commerce City released high levels of sulfur dioxide Wednesday morning after a malfunction, and those excess emissions could have caused area residents to experience asthma attacks and have problems breathing while exercising or working outdoors.The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced the spikes in sulfur dioxide Wednesday evening, saying they were higher than normal but did not violate federal air quality standards.It is not known whether the release exceeded the amounts of emissions allowed by the refinery’s federal air permit.The National Ambient Air Quality Standard for sulfur dioxide is 75 parts per billion per hour. Tow Truck Accident near Shepard Avenue Left 22-Year-Old Fresno WomanFRESNO, CA (April 13, 2023) – Early Wednesday morning, a car crash involving a tow truck on Friant Road claimed the life of Amaya Chenot.Officers responded to the collision around 1:00 a.m. in the area near Shepard Avenue in Fresno.Upon arrival, officers discovered the wreckage involving a tow truck and a car.Based on the investigation, a northbound tow truck on Friant Road collided with a woman’s vehicle going west on Shepard.In addition, footage from the incident revealed that the tow truck ran a red light and t-boned a woman’s vehicle, sending it onto the opposing lane.Responding medical personnel arrived and extricated the woman from her vehicle.Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
