BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Walmart will be closed on Thanksgiving Day for the fourth year in a row, the company's U.S. president and CEO John Furner announced in a LinkedIn post on Monday. "Thanksgiving is a special day, and we want our store associates to have the chance to spend it with their families and loved ones," Furner said. "We have so much to be thankful for, and I'm especially grateful for our associates." Sam’s Club cuts membership to $15 before the holidays For decades, Walmart stores had typically remained open on Thanksgiving Day to kick off the holiday shopping season. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic happened. The retail giant parted with tradition in 2020 and made the decision to close its stores on Thanksgiving to express gratitude to its staff and give workers a break. USA TODAY reported that 2020 was the first year Walmart closed its stores for this particular holiday since the late 1980s. Red Alert: Vixen is Back with a Bang

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 02:05:39 GMT

Red Alert: Ironically enough, when Vixen released its new single “Red” last week, it came out of the blue. Their last single was “You Ought to Know By Now” from 2018’s Live Fire. The last studio album was Live & Learn in 2006, though only late guitarist and founding member Jan Kuehnemund was on that record from the classic lineup. Not a single musician on Live & Learn is a member of Vixen 2023.The lineup has shifted dramatically. Iconic singer Janet Gardner left (again) in 2019, while classic lineup bassist Share Pederson went on Hiatus in March of 2022. That has left drummer Roxy Petrucci to fly the flag, and you can kinda understand the cynicism from some quarters. “Just the drummer,” they say. “That’s not Vixen.” As is always the case with these reunions, the proof is in the pudding.Petrucci has assembled a killer band to carry Vixen forward. Guitarist Britt Lightning and bassist Julia Lage are technically gifted players, both blessed with the appropriate rock ‘n’ roll sw...

Dark Harvest: Children of the Gore

Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 02:05:39 GMT

Director David Slade’s new Halloween horror movie, Dark Harvest (MGM Studios) has moments of visual verve and a cool pumpkin-headed demon ready to wreak havoc, but a confusing back story undercuts the story’s fright factor. That’s too bad because this home rental release, set in the 1960s, looks great and has a trio of gifted veteran actors in lead roles. They’re probably here less for the script than to work with the director of the underappreciated, but truly scary vampire film, 30 Days of Night, as well as Twilight: Eclipse.Based on an acclaimed 2006 short novel by Norman Partridge, adapted by screenwriter Michael Gilio (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Dark Harvest opens on a Midwest farm town in 1963. It’s a place where the corn crows high, the boys dress like they’re auditioning for Grease and where Kelly (a winning E’myri Crutchfield), the only African American student in the high school, doesn’t dare dream of being asked to the town dance. All decisions are made...

By Nathaniel Meyersohn | CNNNew York  — Tesla has beaten back previous efforts by workers to unionize – but the United Auto Workers hopes a successful strike against Ford, General Motors and Stellantis could help it organize at Tesla.UAW membership has declined in recent decades, and the auto industry is moving to electric vehicles. UAW doesn’t have any choice but to take on [Tesla],” said John Logan, a professor of labor and employment studies at San Francisco State University.Tesla controls around 60% of the electric vehicle market in the United States, and Detroit and foreign automakers in the South are racing to catch up. Published Thu, 13 Feb 2025 02:05:39 GMT

Eugene Hernandez wants to make clear he wasn’t calling his bookie when caught on camera talking on his phone at the 49ers game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. And he wasn’t calling out of work either. In the moment that became a meme which went viral on social media almost instantly during the 49ers 42-10 blowout of his Dallas Cowboys, the costume clad Hernandez answered a call from a friend who wanted to tell him they had seen him on TV. The photo has been posted with captions including  “Mom, can you pick me up?” and “Yeah, so about that money I told you to bet on the Cowboys for me.” A video of Hernandez was even shared on ESPN’s Tik Tok account, garnering over 80,000 likes. But Hernandez, a Vacaville firefighter who lives in Lodi, has taken the attention and the jokes at his team’s expense in stride, immediately making memes of his own and starting an instagram account under the handle @Cowboysphoneguy to keep the jokes coming. He said his colleagues at the fire department h...

Tamalpais High School students led a walkout Wednesday to protest a video in which their peers used a racial slur. The video captures several students using the slur, while others laughed along. The video has circulated among students since last week, said Logan Raven and Auvin Cole, both seniors on the school basketball team and co-presidents of the Black Student Union.Raven and Cole organized the walkout protest to advocate for harsher punishments for racism and to show solidarity against prejudice.“I think this brought attention to racist comments and the use of the n-word around campus and online,” said Raven, a resident of the Homestead Valley community.Student leaders delivered speeches to around 125 students at the school before the march. The protest walk went from Tamalpais High to Mill Valley City Hall and back to the school along Miller Avenue. SANTA CRUZ — Fire crews, decked out in bright yellow suits and helmets to match, dotted the parched meadowland at Wilder Ranch State Park Wednesday, methodically igniting light brown blankets of grass with orange flame as part of the latest round of prescribed burns in Santa Cruz County. The effort, which aims to collectively burn 300 acres of grassland, shrubbery and forest understory at the park within the next four to six days, is being led by California State Parks but includes crew members from Cal Fire, Central Coast Prescribed Burn Association and graduate students from San Jose State University.“Fire is a natural process, just like the water cycle and the carbon and the nitrogen cycle, that is fundamental to the landscape,” said Portia Halbert, a senior environmental scientist with State Parks and the incident commander leading the roughly 40-person crew Wednesday. “We are reintroducing fire to its natural role in the environment and it is an incredibly valuable tool for help...
