Ethics chair launches new bid to expel Rep. Santos

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 21:04:43 GMT

By Kevin Freking | Associated PressWASHINGTON — The chairman of the House Ethics Committee announced Friday he has filed a resolution to force a vote on expelling Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., from Congress, one day after the committee issued a withering report detailing substantial evidence that Santos converted campaign donations for his own personal use.Santos easily survived an expulsion vote earlier this month as lawmakers in both parties stressed the need to allow due process, as Santos is also facing nearly two dozen charges in federal court. But the release of the committee’s findings has generated new momentum for ousting the scandal-plagued freshman. Shortly after the report was released, Santos announced he would not seek reelection.“The evidence uncovered in the Ethics Committee’s Investigative Subcommittee investigation is more than sufficient to warrant punishment and the most appropriate punishment, is expulsion,” said Rep. Stanford football marks the end of its Pac-12 era on Saturday, and the Cardinal will do it in front of a packed house.Cardinal officials announced this week that Saturday’s Big Game is a sellout, with more than 50,000 tickets sold – a sign that the Cal-Stanford rivalry is special no matter where the teams are in the standings.“It’s probably the most energy I’ve seen surrounding a game during my four seasons here,” Cardinal senior offensive lineman Connor McLaughlin said.None of Stanford’s first five home games drew more than 32,000 to Stanford Stadium. Those home dates included some buzz-worthy matchups: the final Pac-12 games against AP Top 10 teams Oregon and Washington and Heisman candidates Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr.; the last scheduled visit from in-state rival UCLA as well as the opening game of the Troy Taylor era.But the 126th Big Game — the final meeting before both teams move to the Atlantic Coast Conference next season — will receive a worthy sendoff. ...

SANTA CLARA — Christian McCaffrey’s 17-game touchdown streak may be over, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming to town, and he’s scored more against them than any opponent in his career. He’s not taking them for granted, however.“I played against these guys a lot in Carolina. They’re well coached, and they play fast and physical,” McCaffrey said ahead of Sunday’s game between the 49ers (6-3) and Bucs (4-5).McCaffrey has scored two touchdowns in each of his past three games against Tampa Bay. Cash bail policies are under fresh scrutiny across the U.S.
