Published Wed, 12 Feb 2025 20:50:42 GMT

PARIS (AP) — Monaco did not even need goals from its forwards to beat Lens 3-0 at home and move to the top of the French league on Saturday.Wissam Ben Yedder failed to add to his league-leading four goals and Takumi Minamino stayed on three, and it hardly mattered.Coach Adi Hütter’s free-scoring side has 10 points from four games and was two points clear of second-placed Marseille, which drew at Nantes 1-1 on Friday.Lens, which finished second last season to qualify for the Champions League, has picked up only one point and club-record signing Elye Wahi was kept quiet up front by Monaco’s defense. Two of Monaco’s defenders scored, too, as it reached a healthy 13 goals from four matches. Wilfried Songo headed in from Caio Henrique’s corner in the 24th minute and, after midfielder Aleksandr Golovin turned in a pass from Minamino in the 36th, it was Guillermo Maripan’s turn to head home another pinpoint Henrique corner in the 59th.In the other match, Brest ...

The athletic 22-year-old, who’s played mostly in center field this season, raced to the gap and lunged to snare Tim Anderson’s liner.Greene jammed his elbow on the play and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh as a precaution. TELLURIDE, Colo. -- The Colorado mountain town of Telluride has seen extra foot traffic over the past week and during Labor Day weekend due to the Telluride Film Festival. But those dining at 221 South Oak on Wednesday got their own show when a big bear decided to pass through. “It was later that evening, but with the film festival going on we still had guests in the restaurant," Sophie Iglar, a manager at 221 South Oak said. Why bears in Colorado like trash, explained Iglar estimated there were still 15 to 20 people dining inside and outside when the big bear made its way onto the outside dining patio, prompting those outside to head in. “Someone ran down and said there is a bear upstairs and I said 'Oh no here we go!'" Iglar said. The whole thing was caught on camera by both staff and those dining.   “Our little neighborhood bear was on our back patio and then came up and around and headed towards the street," Iglar said. The owner and chef at 221 South Oak, Eliza Gavin, has own...

Italian ex-premier: French missile downed an airliner in 1980, killing 81

ROME — A former Italian premier, in an interview published on Saturday, contended that a French air force missile accidentally brought down a passenger jet over the Mediterranean Sea in 1980 in a failed bid to assassinate Libya’s then leader Moammar Gadhafi.Former two-time Premier Giuliano Amato appealed to French President Emmanuel Macron to either refute or confirm his assertion about the cause of the crash on June 27, 1980, which killed all 81 persons aboard the Italian domestic flight. In an interview with Rome daily La Repubblica, Amato said he is convinced that France hit the plane while targeting a Libyan military jet. While acknowledging he has no hard proof, Amato also contended that Italy tipped off Gadhafi, and so the Libyan, who was heading back to Tripoli from a meeting in Yugoslavia, didn’t board the Libyan military jet. What caused the crash is one of modern Italy’s most enduring mysteries. Some say a bomb exploded aboard the Itavia jetliner on a flight from ...

A move to add López, who hasn’t reported to the team in Arizona, to the 28-man roster has yet to be made.Manager Brandon Hyde said he hopes López can “feel at home” when he joins the Orioles and “pitch well for us” over the final month of the regular season.“Lópey is somebody that a lot of us in that clubhouse are close with,” Hyde said. “He had some really good moments in the first half last yea...

They were the kids most disrupted by the pandemic, the ones who were still learning to write their names and tie their shoes when schools shut down in the spring of 2020.Now, they’re the big kids at elementary schools across the United States. Many still need profound help overcoming the effects of the pandemic. To catch up, schools have deployed a wide range of strategies. And among some incoming fourth-graders, there are encouraging signs of gains. But as this generation progresses, many will need extra reading support that schools are not as accustomed to providing for older students.Beyond third grade, fewer teachers each year know how to help students who are lacking key foundational reading skills, said Elizabeth Albro, an executive at the U.S. Department of Education’s independent research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences.“Middle and high school teachers aren’t expecting to have to teach kids how to read,” Albro said.Nationally, students suffered deep learning setbacks...
