Inside the battle over who gets to build the grid of the future

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:52:09 GMT

The U.S. Department of Energy issued a draft report in February that found a “pressing need” for new electric transmission infrastructure across the country to improve reliability, connect a rapidly growing number of solar, wind and battery storage projects, supply increasing electric demand and alleviate scattered pockets of consistently high prices across the country. To meet the future envisioned by the federal infrastructure act and the Inflation Reduction Act, which both contain major provisions to boost clean energy, the country needs to increase its current transmission system by an eye-popping 57% by 2035, the report says. Princeton University’s Net-Zero America study estimates expanding transmission capacity by 60% by 2030 will cost $330 billion and tripling it by 2050 will cost $2.2 trillion. But in some states, bills that have been pushed by utilities to give them exclusive or preferential treatment for building regional transmission lines, called “right...

Missouri Senate committee debates vaccine mandates, eviction moratoriums

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:52:09 GMT

Two bills targeting issues growing out of the COVID-19 pandemic got a hearing Tuesday in the Senate Emerging Issues Committee. One bill, SB 169, would restrict public entities from enforcing COVID-19 vaccinations while also providing employees protection from employers seeking to impose vaccination requirements. The other, HB 730, would restrict local entities from imposing a moratorium on evictions, addressing complaints raised by property owners during the pandemic.Sen. Ben Brown, a Republican from Washington who sponsored the vaccine legislation, said he wants to create exemptions from medical requirements for employees with sincere religious objections or with medical conditions verified by a physician.“If you’re a nurse that serves those with weakened or completely compromised immune systems, (lack of vaccination) should be a cause for you not to work in that environment,” he said.Dillon said that many Missouri hospitals already have their own policies which provide exceptions, ...

Lawmakers weigh removing abortion language from Missouri bill extending postpartum care

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:52:09 GMT

Missouri legislators heard testimony Tuesday night urging them to remove an anti-abortion provision from a bill that seeks to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage out of concern it could put federal approval at risk. The House Committee on General Laws heard a bill passed out of the Senate in February that would extend postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to one year in an effort to lower Missouri’s maternal mortality rate. The Department of Social Services estimates it would cover upwards of 4,000 people who otherwise go uninsured two months after the end of pregnancy. Missouri had the 12th highest maternal mortality in the nation from 2018 to 2020, and three-quarters of pregnancy-related deaths in the state were preventable, the Missouri Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review Board found last year. But the Senate added language stating that no one who “knowingly receives services that are in violation of state law” can receive the coverage — which supporters said was designe...

Bo Byram is unhindered in Avalanche’s system and still just getting started: “I’ve just been trying to shoot the puck more.”

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:52:09 GMT

As teammates wished Kurtis MacDermid a happy birthday in the Avalanche practice facility locker room March 25, Bo Byram piped in. With a mischievous grin, he implored reporters in the room to shower MacDermid with attention, making sure to point out the enforcer’s age. MacDermid was turning 29.A week later as Jack Johnson reached his 1,100th career game and was asked the secret to his longevity, Byram interrupted from his stall: “Hanging out with young guys.”The reminders are constant that Byram is still only 21 years old, even as the Avalanche defenseman makes that harder to believe on a nightly basis. Byram is unhindered right now, and he’s becoming increasingly unleashed.Already one of the most talented players on a stacked Colorado roster, he has the green light from coaches and from the team’s structure to be as assertive as he wants offensively. He built trust with a steady, reliable 20-game playoff resume last year: no goals but nine assists, a l...

Opinion: Bad sports, Westside, threaten to turn Park Hill open space into a Topgolf

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:52:09 GMT

Denver voters refused to acquiesce to Westside Investment Partners’ very first lowball offer and now the developer is threatening to take their ball and … play golf alone. The word “childish” comes to mind.Let’s remind readers that the investors and partners at Westside bought the 155-acre golf course in Northeast Park Hill out from under the city of Denver,  aggressively buying out the golf course management company’s right of first refusal.Westside knew the land was under a conservation easement that prohibited development. Westside knew the city had struck a deal to purchase the land for a regional park. And still, Westside paid an undisclosed amount to buy the right-of-first refusal and then paid $24 million for the land.In other words, Andy Klein and his partners and investors forced Denver to play a game with them, knowing they were underdogs, and now are playing the role of poor loser in dramatic fashion, telling Westword they will consider putting a Topgolf ...
