Kurtenbach: The 49ers signing Javon Hargrave corrects John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan’s biggest roster mistake

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:12:04 GMT

The 49ers have managed their roster as well as any team in the NFL over the last few seasons. That’s why, despite not having an MVP-caliber quarterback, the team has played in three NFC Championship Games in the last four seasons and was a quarter away from winning Super Bowl LIV.But trading DeForest Buckner to the Colts for a first-round pick that became his replacement at defensive tackle, Javon Kinlaw, was not one of those gilded Niners’ roster moves. It took three years, but the 49ers finally corrected that mistake.Buckner isn’t returning to the Niners, but Javon Hargrave is coming to the Bay.The former Pittsburgh Steeler and Philadelphia Eagle defensive tackle is leaving the commonwealth after agreeing to a four-year, $84 million contract. It’s big money for a big man to fill a big need for the Niners. While the Niners’ decision to sign Hargrave, 30, goes deeper than just one game, the NFC Championship Game between the Eagles and Niners showed exactly...

Review: ‘Once’ makes a poignant swan song for Tabard Theatre

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:12:04 GMT

There is a powerful dichotomy when witnessing The Tabard Theatre Company’s latest production, “Once.”That dichotomy is laid bare early on, during the show’s signature number, “Falling Slowly.” As “Guy” and “Girl” enter the final, enchanting notes of the majestic tune, just watch the rest of the cast who occupy all angles of the stage. They witness the proceedings with a mixture of what must be satisfaction, inspiration, and profound sadness on what is the company’s final production. The company has announced, after 22 years of presenting theater and live music, “Once” will be its finale. In a statement, executive artistic director Johnathan Rhys Williams, who also directed “Once,” cited three factors that have converged on the company: increasing costs, decreasing ticket sales and the continuing effects of the pandemic.Tabard is arguably the best theatrical venue in the South Bay. With its prime location in the heart of downtown San Jose, a charming bar, parking opt...

March Madness is Terry’s time at Texas for permanent job

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:12:04 GMT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Each Texas win on its march into the NCAA Tournament raises a recurring question about interim coach Rodney Terry: What more must he to do to earn the job on a permanent basis? The Longhorns are the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region. They finished second in the Big 12, just a game out of first place, and routed regular season conference champion and No. 1 seed Kansas twice in a span of eight days. That includes a 20-point pounding in last week’s Big 12 championship game. All that came after former coach Chris Beard was arrested on a felony domestic violence charge on Dec. 12, suspended and then fired three weeks later when the school determined he was “unfit” to lead the program. The charge has since been dropped and Beard was hired Monday as the new coach at Mississippi. But even with all that Texas winning under Terry, the chatter around him still seems to be that the 54-year must prove himself in March Madness as Texas readies for its opener against Colgat...

AP source: Chiefs agree with OT Taylor on 4-year, $80M deal

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:12:04 GMT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jawaan Taylor has agreed to an $80 million, four-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs to replace Orlando Brown Jr. as the blindside protector for Patrick Mahomes, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal cannot become official until Wednesday. The 25-year-old Taylor started all 66 games he’s played in since entering the league as a second-round pick of the Jaguars in the 2019 draft. And while he primarily held down the right side of the line in Jacksonville, the expectation is that — much as Brown did when he arrived from Baltimore — Taylor will switch to the left side in Kansas City. The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Brown a year ago, when they could not agree to a long-term deal with his new representative. He wound up playing last season for $16.7 million under terms of the tag, helping the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, and the sides again worked on...
