Thousands of people desperate for food and basic items broke into aid warehouses in the besieged enclave. The San Jose Sharks were 20 minutes away from their first victory of the season on Sunday. But unless they expect their goalies to be perfect, it’s going to be hard to earn a win by scoring just once a game. The Sharks led by one going into the third period but allowed goals by Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson in the final 18 minutes in a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals, extending San Jose’s season-long losing streak to nine games. On a scramble beside the Sharks’ goal, Wilson chipped a puck over goalie Mackenzie Blackwood which went off defenseman Kyle Burroughs into the net with 4:45 left in regulation time for a 2-1 Capitals lead.Evgeny Kuznetsov then added an empty net goal for the Capitals with 58 seconds left.Luke Kunin scored the Sharks’ only goal and Blackwood finished with 39 saves. The Sharks (0-8-1) have now scored just nine goals in nine games. On Washington’s tying goal at the 2:18 mark of the third period, Mike Hoffman tried to glove down a head-manning pass inside the...

Instant analysis of 49ers’ third straight loss, a 31-17 stinker vs. Bengals

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 04:55:28 GMT

SANTA CLARA – A swift three-game losing streak escorts the 49ers into their bye week, with plenty of issues to resolve after Sunday’s 31-17 home defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals. It was their first loss at Levi’s Stadium in 12 games, dating back to Oct. 23, 2022, and they now sit second in the NFC West behind Seattle (5-2).Three turnovers by Brock Purdy played an obvious factor, especially interceptions on back-to-back throws that put a comeback in serious doubt, even with 13 minutes remaining. But the 49ers’ defense also was far too generous, from yielding 19 consecutive completions to Joe Burrow before halftime, to multiple missed tackles, to allowing a fourth and final Bengals touchdown with 2:54 remaining. These 49ers (5-3) aren’t the same high-scoring machine that shredded the Dallas Cowboys 42-10 in their previous appearance in Santa Clara. This marked their third straight game scoring 17 points, and, as noted, it’s their third straight loss. After falling at Cleveland (19-1...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — As Carolina kicker Eddy Pineiro prepared for a winning field-goal attempt with 3 seconds left, he turned to holder Johnny Hekker and said: “Listen, when I make this kick, I’m jumping on your back and you’re taking me all the way to the 50-yard line.”Hekker responded: “Alright. Done deal.”Three successful kicks later, Pineiro found himself getting a piggyback from the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Hekker out to the team’s logo at midfield, his hand raised in victory after beating the Houston Texans 15-13 with a 23-yarder as time expired.“It was fun,” Pineiro said with a laugh. “I was just saying things to get my mind off what was actually happening.”There was a lot happening at the time.Pineiro, who was hoping to redeem himself after missing an extra point in the first half, initially lined up for a 38-yarder after Bryce Young moved the Panthers into field-goal range with a 15-play drive that took six minutes off the clock. But Houston’s Tavierre Thomas raced into t...

Steelers’ Johnson rips refs for no-call on hit that injured QB Pickett: ‘They should get fined’

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steelers wide reciever Diontae Johnson called for the referees to be fined following Pittsburgh’s 20-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, a defeat in which quarterback Kenny Pickett left with a rib injury following a big hit.“They were calling some stupid stuff,” Johnson said. “They should get fined for making terrible calls. That’s how (mad) I am because they cost us the game. I don’t care what nobody says, they cost us the game.“(The referees) must’ve got paid good today or something,” he added. “(The referees) wanted (Jacksonville) to win. Everything was in their favor. They were getting every little call. But it is what it is.”Johnson’s displeasure centered around roughing the passer calls — one that was made against Pittsburgh and another he believes the officials missed, resulting in Pickett’s injury. In the first quarter, Pittsburgh’s Keanu Neal was called for roughing the passer on Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence during a ser...

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has never missed a game because of injury in his 12-year career, a testament to remarkable toughness as well as good fortune. But his luck might have finally run out, putting Cousins’ season and the Vikings’ playoff hopes in jeopardy.Cousins, 35, left in the fourth quarter of his team’s 24-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday with what the team believes is an Achilles tendon injury.“We are fearing an Achilles injury,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said. “The severity of that, I do not know at this point, but I do know that’s what our fear is at the moment.”Cousins’ injury comes as he was in the midst of one of his best seasons. He had thrown 18 touchdown passes with only five interceptions and had sparked a three-game winning streak that got the Vikings (4-4) back to the .500 mark.Jaren Hall, a rookie fifth-round pick from BYU, took over after Cousins got hurt.“Our thoughts and prayers are with Kirk,” ...
