N.S. mass shooting: how gun smuggling happened, and the inquiry’s call for reforms

HALIFAX — A decade before a Nova Scotia man used smuggled guns to murder 22 people in the province in 2020, police information systems had labelled him as a firearms risk.Yet those records never found their way to the Canada Border Services Agency, and they didn’t prevent the mass shooter from obtaining a Nexus card — granting him status as a low-risk traveller. The final report of the public inquiry into Canada’s worst mass shooting, released last week, details troubling breakdowns in information sharing and recommends reforms to develop “fully interoperable systems” for exchanging records between police and the federal border agency. The report also describes how red flags about the killer didn’t lead to detection of his illegal activities during any of his 21 border crossings between 2016 and the April 18-19, 2020, killings. It was during that time that Gabriel Wortman — a wealthy, 51-year-old denture maker — is believed to have smuggled three semi-auto...Family of Indian migrants who died in Quebec shocked by river crossing attempt

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A retired senior prosecutor in Greece was named Friday as the new leader of a far-right party as it seeks to sidestep a ban on its participation in an upcoming general election. Participation of the Greeks Party could potentially change the outcome of the May 21 parliamentary election as poll margins tighten between the leading incumbent New Democracy party and a left-wing opposition party, Syriza. The Greeks Party is vying to field candidates despite the ban the Greek Parliament approved in February on the grounds that the party’s founder, Ilias Kasidiaris, is serving a 13-year prison sentence for membership in a criminal organization.Kasidiaris founded the Greeks Party after receiving his sentence in 2020. He was convicted as a leading member of an extreme right party, Golden Dawn, which was blamed for multiple attacks against migrants and left-wing political activists. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Childcare affordability is on the mind of councilmember Vanessa Fuentes. She and her colleagues on the Austin City Council passed a resolution earlier this year that makes opening a childcare facility easier and cheaper, and she says more needs to be done. Finding adequate childcare has become a timely and expensive issue for parents around the country and here in Travis County. Brightwheel, a childcare management software, estimates the average cost of childcare in Austin is $1,100 a month. Fuentes sees the same thing. "I have families in my district who are paying up to $1,100 a month in childcare. And that is tuition-level prices," Fuentes explained. She said there is a need to have a dedicated revenue source for funding childcare operations that will create more options for parents and offset some of the prices. Fuentes and her colleagues are actively studying how to make it possible.
